Our History

The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy and the Eshelman Institute for Innovation launched the Young Innovators Program in 2016 to cultivate the next generation of innovative thinkers in STEM as it relates to the pharmaceutical sciences and to expand access to pre-college STEM opportunities to students from all backgrounds.

YIP welcomed its first cohort of student interns in the spring of 2016, which included 17 students from nine local high schools. Since then, YIP has grown in both size and breadth, recruiting students from across the state and offering research opportunities at every phase of the pharmaceutical sciences, including drug discovery, development, and delivery, as well as pharmacy practice, clinical education, pharmaceutical outcomes and healthcare policy.
