Thank you for your interest in the Young Innovators Program! Before starting your application, carefully review the eligibility criteria and application instructions below.

All applicants have now been notified via email whether they have been invited to join us for the Final Round of the admissions process. If you applied and did not receive a decision email on April 7th, please check your spam folder. Email if you have any further questions.

Eligibility Criteria

In order to be considered for the Young Innovators Program, applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  1. Currently enrolled in 10th, 11th or 12th grade.
  2. Must be 16 years of age by the program start date (June 14, 2021).
  3. Must be a North Carolina resident.
  4. Must be able to participate in the full 8-weeks of the program (in adherence with our absence policy).
  5. Must be able to arrange your own transportation to and from campus Monday-Friday throughout the duration of the program. While we encourage students from across North Carolina to apply, if you are not within commuting distance, you must arrange your own living accommodations for the summer
  6. Authorized to work in the U.S. at the time your application is submitted.

All applications for the Young Innovators Program must be submitted online. More information will be announced on this page in mid-January. The application consists of the following sections:

Personal Information

In this section, you will be asked to provide information such as your name, address, and contact information, as well as optional demographic information.

Personal Statement:

Please submit a one- to two-page essay to answer the following prompts. Your responses should be no more than one page in length each and uploaded as a single PDF with your application. Please include your full name and high school in the header and format your essay as follows: Font: 12 pt. Times New Roman, Spacing: Single or exactly 12 pt. Margins: 1 inch. You may answer each prompt separately (in the same document) or combine them into a single essay. 

Prompt #1: What inspires you to pursue STEM opportunities in pharmaceutical science research and/or the practice of pharmacy as opposed to other disciplines? Why are you interested in participating in the Young Innovators Program? How will the program advance your academic and career goals? 

Prompt #2: The mission of the Young Innovators Program is “To expose and engage exceptional and highly motivated high school students from diverse backgrounds in cutting edge and innovative research experiences in the pharmaceutical sciences.” If accepted into YIP, how would you contribute to this mission of diversity, equity, and inclusion?

High School Transcript:

Please obtain a copy of your transcript from your guidance counselor and upload as a PDF. Your transcript must reflect all classes, grades, and your current GPA (an unofficial transcript is acceptable). Home-schooled students are required to submit equivalent documentation.

STEM Teacher Contact:

Please provide the name and contact information of a teacher that can attest to your academic strengths, personal character, and interest in STEM. If you are selected to participate in an interview, we will reach out to your teacher directly and request a recommendation.

Once the application deadline closes, the selection committee will convene to review all applications. Select applicants will be invited to participate in an interview with the Program Coordinator.

Final selection of the 2021 Young Innovators Program interns will be announced by mid-April.
